Abstract
In this paper, I claim that what are claimed as instances of overt wh-movement in the literature (Takahashi 1993, Nishiyama, et al. 1995) are in fact scrambling. However, I claim that the propositional adjunct wh-word way 'why' truly constitute overt wh-movement. The result of the present research suggests that there is an interesting asymmetry of overt wh-movement hitherto unnoticed between two types of wh-words in Korean: indefinite wh-words vs. way 'why'. If the present proposal is on the right track, it has a nontrivial theoretical implication against the proposal by Cheng (1997: 28), according to which no language has the option of using either a question morpheme or syntactic movement of wh-words to form a wh-question.
