초록

Objectives: Hwa-byung is a culture-bound syndrome primarily affecting middle-aged women. However, its epidemiology and manifestations have evolved due to societal changes. This study aimed to investigate how perceptions of hwa-byung differ among the general population based on gender and generational factors. Methods: An online survey was conducted from April 30 to May 7, 2025, involving 500 adults aged 20 and older. The sample was evenly balanced by gender (1:1), with each decade group (20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60+) representing 20% of the participants. Results: The findings revealed that perceptions of hwa-byung varied among individuals based on gender and generation. Notable differences emerged in how various groups perceived the characteristics and causes of hwa-byung, as well as in their anger management strategies. Anger directed toward different political groups was generally more pronounced than anger toward individuals of differing gender, age, or socioeconomic status. Conclusions: This study provides empirical insights into the differences in perceptions of hwa-byung and anger across gender and generational lines. It broadens the traditional understanding of hwa-byung and underscores the necessity for a new model that aligns with contemporary sociocultural contexts. Additionally, the findings may serve as foundational data for future health policy and service planning.
