Abstract
Geography remains marginalized within the constellation of elementary school subjects, often perceived as having limited pedagogical value and struggling to gain recognition as a core discipline. To investigate the predicaments facing geography education in Korean elementary schools, this study employed a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) methodology. Four FGD sessions were analyzed, and the key findings are as follows. First, the FGDs—comprising elementary teacher-researchers specializing in geography education—identified four broad categories encompassing 18 issues and 56 problems. Second, these predicaments arise from complex and long-standing systemic conditions. Addressing them requires a comprehensive examination of the institutional structures and curricular mechanisms that shape both the status of geography and its enacted practice within the elementary curriculum. At the same time, strategies that illuminate teachers’ lived realities and instructional practices are essential for meaningful improvement. Third, given the authentic, context-dependent, demand-driven, and often concealed nature of educational predicaments, analytic frameworks must accord substantial weight to teachers’ voices. As practitioner-experts who mediate processes of official and pedagogical recontextualization, teachers offer critical insights into the interrelations among theory and practice, planning and implementation, and teaching and learning that collectively constitute these predicaments.
