Abstract
This paper reassesses the chronology and operational plans of military sites during the Goguryeo state’s invasion of the southwestern Korean Peninsula after AD 475AD. Previous studies on military invasions by the Goguryeo state focused on building pottery chronologies for fortresses and applied them to military plans under the Goguryeo state’s ‘southward campaigns’. This approach often hinders understanding the dynamic processes of constructing, maintaining or abandoning military sites during the wartimes. Using Bayesian chronological modeling of radiocarbon dates, I reviewed the chronology of the duration of Goguryeo fortresses. This refined chronology of fortresses reveals varied occupation ranges across space and time, involving consecutive reconstruction and abandonment processes. The pottery, iron, and built environments found in the fortresses further provide in-depth context for diverse military plans from the military troops to the community groups across region. Goguryeo management plans encompassed not only confrontations but also negotiations with localized circumstances, reflecting complex sociopolitical interrelationships between military troops and regional commmunities. A clearer understanding of military management can be further achieved by integrating multi-proxy archaeological data with refined strategies for radiocarbon dating.
