靑城 成大中의 史論 散文 硏究 ― 『靑城雜記』 「揣言」을 중심으로

본고는 靑城雜記 「揣言」에 수록된 成大中의 史論 散文을 대상으로 주제의식과 형상화 양상 등 문예미에 대해 논의한 글이다. 성대중의 사론 산문은 이덕무의평비가 편마다 부기되어 있어 성대중의 저술의도와 문학적 역량을 파악하는 데 도움을 준다. 그의 사론 산문은 크게 넷으로 나눌 수 있다. 첫째 <秦漢仁暴>와 <商周>에서는유구한 세월동안 절대적 권위를 차지했던 역사적 인물과 사적에 대하여 기왕의 평가에 견인되지 않고 역사 현실과 그 이면에 대한 냉철한 통찰과 분석을 바탕으로 새로운 해석과 평가를 시도한 결과 논리적 설득력을 확보함으로써 성공적으로 의론을펼쳐내었다. 성대중 사론 산문의 특장이 잘 드러난 秀作들이다. 둘째 <韓信>․<田橫>․<李左車>․<田延年>에서는 이들의 成敗를 통해 正名과 時宜適切한 進退를 강조하여 후세 신하된 자들의 처세에 시사하는 바가 크다. 이를 위해 다양한 논거를 들고 對比와 類比의 기법을 적극 활용하여 의론을 논리적으로 설파하였다. 이중 <한신>․<전횡>․<전연년>은 청성집에도 수록되어 있는데, 사론 산문 중에서 도 의론이 엄정하고 문체가 아순한 글들이 청성집에 수록된 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 셋째 <楚漢成敗>와 <董公>에서는 인재의 등용과 활용을 통한 군주의 이상적인 治世에 대해 논의한 뒤 한 국가의 성패는 훌륭한 인재의 등용여부에 달려있음을주장하였다. 넷째 <平勃>과 <秦楚報復>에서는 ‘보복’과 ‘보복이 순환’하는 속성을포착하고 다양한 예를 제시하여 권선징악이라는 역사적 이상을 강조함으로써 군주의 치세와 신하의 처세에 보다 신중할 것을 권계하였다.
Abstract
This article examined the literary beauty of Seong Dae-jung's 11 historical essays contained in the 「Chwe·oen(揣言)」 of Cheong·seong·jap·gi(靑城雜記),focusing on theme sense and imagery aspects. The reviews of Yi Deok-mu that were accompanied on each essay made it easy to understand the purposes of writing and literary capability of writer. Seong's historical essays can be classified into four groups. The first group includes <Jin·han·in·pok(秦漢仁暴)> and <Sang·ju(商周)>. In the two essays, Seong tried to newly interpret and assess historical figures and scenes that had great authorities in the long time, not constrained by former assessments but based on sober insight and analysis on historical realities and their hidden sides. In consequence, he secured logical persuasions and put forth successful discussions. They are masterworks that show well the strong points of Seong's historical essays. The second group includes <Han·sin(韓信)>, <Jeon·hoing(田橫)>,<Yi·ja·geo(李左車)> and <Jeon·yeon·nyeon(田延年)>. In these essays, Seong highlighted the correct justification and timely moving-forward or back decisions of vassals from their successes and failures, giving many suggestions for future generations to get along in the public office world. He argued logically by presenting various grounds and using comparison and exemplification method actively. <Han·sin>, <Jeon·hoing> and <Jeon·yeon·nyeon> are contained in Cheong·seong·jip(靑城集). Articles of strict argument and dignified style among Seong's historical essays were found in that book. The third group consists of <Cho·han·seong·pae(楚漢成敗)> and <Dong·gong (董公)>. Seong discussed in these essays how kings could develop ideal ruling through the selection and use of the talented people, and argued the success of a nation are up to the appointment of the talented people. The fourth are <Pyeong·bal(平勃)> and <Jin·cho·bo·bok(秦楚報復)>. He pointed out the attribute of revenge and revenge's vicious circle, and emphasized the good triumphing over the evil, that is, his historical ideal,with many examples. Through it, he recommended that kings should be more careful in ruling while vassals in getting along in the world.
