Abstract
The purpose of the study was to develop and validate the Self-Concept Inventory II’ for young children. The domains and their variables of self-concept were identified on the base of precedent studies and ‘SCI-I (Lee & Koh, 2006)’. Self-concept as the set of image and perception that an individual has about self is very important to understand oneself. Accordingly, it is important and required to find constructs of self-concept that was divided and differentiated by developmental stage from early childhood to old age. Therefore, in this study, we developed a measuring tool that identifies the components of the self-concept and can reliably and properly measure the young children’s self-concept. 35 items were applied to 1100 young children and the collected data were analyzed through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. KMO and Bartlett test were used in the exploratory factor analysis to confirm the validity and the degree of goodness of the constitution of the test items through factor analysis of sub-domain of young children’s self-concept. As a result of principal component analysis and Varimax rotation, 8 factors exceeding the eigenvalue 1 were found, and the structure of 8 factors were appropriate. In the confirmatory factor analysis using AMOS 24.0, NFI, CFI, NNFI and RMSEA were calculated and the fitness was confirmed. Finally, through this validation process, 31 items consisting of 4(cognitive, affective, social, physical) domains and 8 sub-factors were completed. The cognitive domain consists of linguistic and logical-mathematical self. The affective domain consists of personal-emotional self. The social domain includes relation with friends and parents. Finally, the physical domain involves physical ability and appearance. The ‘Self-Concept Inventory II’ is confirmed as valid and reliable instrument through the analysis results. This test will be useful not only for measuring the self-concept of the infant appropriately but also for the utilization of the gifted child identification.
