차별경험이 우울에 미치는 영향에 관한 탐색적 연구: 사회비교 스트레스와 일반신뢰의 이중매개효과

초록

전 세계적으로 우울 증상으로 진료 받은 환자는 최근 증가 추세에 있으며 이는 한국 역시 마찬가지이다. 이렇듯 증가하는 우울의 원인 주요 원인으로 사회적 불평등이 꼽히고 있다. 본 연구는 사회적 웰빙 모형을 참고하여 차별로 인한 사회적 건강의 악화가 우울의 원인이 되고 있음을 보이고자 했다. 이를 위해 차별경험과 우울의 사이를 사회비교로 인한 스트레스와 일반신뢰가 매개하는 이중매개모형을 구성하여 검증하였다. 2022년 1월 말에 온라인으로 수집된 “성역할과 건강 조사”의 만 19세~69세 1,331개 사례를 분석한 결과 여성, 저소득, 저학력, 비기혼자들에게서 차별경험이 잦았으며, 특히 가구소득과 혼인상태는 차별경험과 함께 사회비교 스트레스, 일반신뢰, 우울 모두에 영향을 미치고 있었다. 이중매개모형 검증 결과 사회비교 스트레스와 일반신뢰 각각의 매개효과가 통계적으로 유의미하였을 뿐 아니라, 두 변수 모두를 거치는 이중매개효과 역시 유효한 것으로 나타났다. 두 매개변수는 차별경험이 우울에 미치는 영향을 부분매개하고 있었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 대중의 정신건강 향상을 위해 사회적 불평등이 완화되어야 할 뿐만 아니라, 향후 학계가 한국 사회의 사회적 웰빙 수준에도 주목할 필요가 있음을 보여주는 것이다.

Abstract

Patients receiving treatment for depressive symptoms worldwide have been on the rise in recent years, and Korea is no exception. Social inequality is cited as a major cause of increasing depression. This study aimed to demonstrate that the deterioration of social health due to discrimination is causing depression by referring to the social well-being model. To this end, a dual-mediation model was constructed and verified, in which social comparison stress and general trust mediate the relationship between discrimination experience and depression. Analyzing 1,331 cases of individuals aged 19-69 collected online at the end of January 2022 in the “Gender Role and Health Survey”, frequent experiences of discrimination were observed among women, low-income, low-educated, and unmarried individuals. In particular, household income and marital status were found to influence social comparison stress, general trust, and depression along with discrimination experience. The results of the dual-mediation model validation showed that both the mediating effects of social comparison stress and general trust were statistically significant, and the dual-mediation effect passing through both variables was also valid. Both mediating variables were found to partially mediate the impact of discrimination experience on depression. These research findings demonstrate the need for alleviating social inequality to improve public mental health, and the academic community should also pay attention to the social well-being level of Korean society in the future.
