지적 장애인을 자녀로 둔 어머니의 사회적 지지와 돌봄 통제감 및 우울: 장애인 생애주기의 영향에 관한 탐색적 연구

본 연구는 지적 장애인의 어머니들에 대해서 사회적 지지와 돌봄 통제감, 그리고 우울이라는 개념과 이들 개념 간 관련이 장애인 자녀가 속한 생애주기에 따라 달라지는가를 탐색적으로 연구하였다. 530명의 사례에 대한 분석결과, 장애인 자녀의 생애주기에 따라 어머니들의 사회적 지지와 자녀발달에 대한 결과기대 및 돌봄 자기효능감 수준이 달랐는데, 구체적으로는 성인기 자녀를 둔 어머니들의 사회적 지지와 자녀발달에 대한 결과기대 수준이 아동기나 청소년기 자녀를 둔 어머니들보다 낮았다. 그러나 어머니들의 우울 수준 및 사회적 지지나 자녀발달에 대한 결과기대 및 돌봄 자기효능감이 우울에 주는 효과는 자녀의 생애주기에 따라 다르지 않았다. 본 연구를 통해 사회적 지지는 지적 장애인의 생애주기를 막론하고 어머니들의 정신건강에 중요한 요소이며, 생애주기상으로는 특히 성인기 장애인의 어머니들에 대한 사회적 지원이 확대되어야 함을 알 수 있었다.

Abstract

This study investigated social support, perceived caregiving control and depressive symptoms and their relationships among 530 mothers of persons with intellectual disabilities in their childhood(age 3-12), adolescence(age 13-18), and adulthood(age 19-35), exploring the effect of the life span affiliation of the children with disabilities. The analysis revealed that mothers of adults showed the lower level of perceived social support and outcome expectancy of developmental achievements than mothers of children and adolescents did. Any differences were not found in the level of depressive symptoms of mothers and in the relations of social support, outcome expectancy and caregiving self-efficacy to depressive symptoms of mothers across the different life span of children. These findings suggested that greater emphasis be placed on the importance of social support for mothers of persons with intellectual disabilities and especially on the expanded provision of social support for families of persons with intellectual disabilities in their adulthood.
