Abstract
The Berbagi Suami, an Indonesian movie released in 2006, shows where the social discourses on the matters of polygyny and sexuality are directed. These themes, which had not been the subjects of the media under Suharto’s authoritarian regime, emerged as important themes in the liberalized and de-centralized reformasi era after the fall of Suharto. The polygyny was legally authorized under the New Order regime but was under various state sanctions in its practices. Thus, the law received criticisms both from the pro- and anti-polygyny groups. The Berbagi Suami reflects the anti-polygyny sentiment. Yet, some contemporaneous movies, particularly the Ayat-ayat Cinta, are in favor of the practice. The popularity of the two movies which show contrasting views on polygyny reveals that the public debate on the polygyny began in a serous manner in society. The Berbagi Suami is a pioneering work which intended to gather public opinion on the future of the polygyny practice. The movie itself is a societal movement which emerged in the new era, when the old order of the New Order regime crumbled, and new sets of social and state orders needed to be established. It also represents that the roles of media as the generator of the social discourses have been expanded in the reformasi era.
