The Purpose of this study is to understand about Mask & Signifier of Photography in 『 La Chambre claire』In the pursuit of this purpose, it would be focused on Richard Avedon's “William Casby, Born a Slave(1963)” and August Sander's portraits in 『La Chambre claire』. I mainly discuss here the photography and text of Chapter 15. since this chapter is critical as ‘signifier’ of the photography. And when Roland Barthes mentions the mask is the difficult region of photography, he is describing with intertext of Italo Calvino's illusion literature and Bertolt Brecht's epic theater. Brecht used the theater as forum for social critique. This study is to exaime the relations of the photography and epic theater.
