성호 이익의 윤리적 시간의식

본고에서는 星湖 李瀷(1681~1764)의 시를 대상으로 하여 성호가 지닌 타자와 시간에 대한 의식을 살펴본다. 성호 이익은 자연적 시간의 질서를 주재하는 존재로서 天, 上帝, 造化翁과 같은 동아시아의 고전적인 신적 타자를 부각시킨다. 성호는 절후에 대한 경험을 통해 상황에 상관없이 신적 타자의 공평무사한 은혜를 신뢰하는 모습을 보인다. 그리고 자연적 질서에 대한 관습적이고 신화적인 설명을 배격하고 합리적 추론을 근거로 삼는다. 인간이 경험하는 四時와 여러 절기, 그리고 그런 분기점들을 표상하는 날씨가 인간의 고난과 유한성을 나타낼 때, 역설적으로 그러한 조건들은 성호로 하여금 타자에 대해 인식하고 사유하게 한다. 이때 타자는 인간뿐만 아니라 초목과 금수에 이르는 자연의 모든 物을 포함하는 개념이다. 인간의 한계로서 조건 지워진 유한성은 성호 이익의 시에서 독서를 통한 학문 활동과 가문의 구축이라는 두 가지 방식을 통해서 극복된다. 학문은 인간만이 추구할 수 있는 활동으로서, 가문을 통한 가족 공동체의 지속은 신과 인간의 협력을 통한 생명의 지속으로서 중요한 의미를 가진다. 성호 이익의 윤리적 시간의식 속에서 경학과 예학의 문제가 통합된다.
Abstract
This essay delves into Seongho Yi Ik(1681~1764)’s consciousness of time and other in his poetry. Seongho emphasizes figures of the classical East-Asian divine other as the Ruler of the temporal order of nature: the Heaven(天), the High Emperor(上帝), and the Creator(造化翁). He shows his deep trust in the divine other and His grace regardless of the circumstances caused by seasons and weather. He rejects a conventional and mythological explanation on the natural order and counts on rational reasoning instead. When the four seasons and their relevant weather conditions represent trials and mortality, paradoxically enough, those conditions enable Seongho to recognize and reflect on others, which cover trees, grass and animals as well as human being. Human mortality conditioned as his confinement is broken by the two significant methods in Seongho Yi Ik’s poetry: scholarship based on reading literature; continuation of familial community based on marriage and birth. Text-based scholarship is the activity that only human being can do; familial community makes life carry on through the cooperation of divine other and human being. Consequently, Seongho’s ethical time-consciousness integrates the studies of Confucian scriptures(經學) and the studies of rituals and manners(禮學), which are regarded as different domains of Neo-Confucian scholarship.
