초기 기독교 당시 기독교와 같은 범주로 취급되기도 했던 에피큐로스주의는 로마시대에 한때 유행한 후 기독교의 성장과 더불어 쇠퇴하였고, 중세 이후 멸절되었다. 그러나 근대 인문주의, 과학주의의 등장과 함께 그 사상은 다시 부활하여 현대세계에 광범위하게 스며들었다. 헬레니즘 시대의 에피큐로스주의 등장 상황과 배경을 살피고, 유물론, 쾌락주의, 정치사회론, 신론을 중심으로 그 사상의 핵심요소를 살피며, 초기기독교와의 관계에 대해 고찰하고, 이어서 로마시대 이후 중세, 근대를 거치는 동안 그 사상의 명맥을 살핀다.
Abstract
The ancients did put Epicureanism in the same category as Christianity in the early Christianity. After its prevalence for a time during the Roman period, Epicureanism was exterminated in the Middle Ages as the Christianity has grown up. Nonetheless it revives with the rise of humanism and scientism, and influenced broadly rational and progressive thought of the modern world. This study seeks to trace the influence of Epicurus through the ages especially in its relations with the Christianity.
