Abstract
Franz Liszt’s Ballade, No.2 is based on the Greek/Roman mythology called “Hero and Leander.”Although the piece shows formal structure of a traditional sonata form, it presents obscure tonal structure. Interestingly, the ambiguous tonality shown in this piece is associated with music theories of Carl Freidrich Weitzmann (1808-80): Liszt's Ballade No.2 was composed in 1853; The same year Weitzmann published “Der übermässige Dreiklang,” and released it in 1854. It is true that Liszt had consistently used the Augmented triads as melodic ornamentations before 1853. However, in his Ballade No.2, he extended their harmonic functions so that the Augmented triads play an important role in the overall tonal structure.
