Abstract
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York houses two paintings of deer antlers attributed to the Qianlong emperor of the Qing dynasty(r. 1735~1796). Previous studies have interpreted these paintings primarily from the perspective of Qianlong’s interest in Western painting styles and subject matters. This paper focuses on one of the two paintings, titled “A Painting of Deer Antlers(Lujiao tu),” to trace the transformation of deer antlers from hunting trophies to auspicious omens sent by the mountain spirits. The paper first examines antler chairs commissioned by Hong Taiji, Kangxi, and Qianlong in the collections of the Beijing and Shenyang Palace Museums. This examination confirms that deer antlers held significant familial and martial values for the Qing emperors. Then, by analyzing Qianlong’s inscription on “A Painting of Deer Antlers,” the paper elucidates how the deer antlers were transformed into auspicious omens through the act of pictorial representation. Qianlong emphasizes the deer as an auspicious animal rather than merely as game, thereby imbuing the Manchu hunting tradition with the Han Chinese cosmological notion of the correspondence between Heaven and man. Thus, “A Painting of Deer Antlers” reveals Qianlong’s intention to elevate Manchu imperial authority to the level of a sage king by interpreting hunting not as a conquest of nature but rather as a communion with nature.
