이 논문은 쿠쿨리 벨라르데의 도예 작품 중에서 작가가 추구하는 탈식민화를 잘 보여주는 세 가지연작을 분석한다. 벨라르데는 페루의 쿠스코에서 출생하여 현재는 미국 필라델피아에서 작업하고 있으며, 2013년 경기세계도자비엔날레 대상을 수상한 경력을 지닌 작가다. 그는 라틴아메리카 출신 여성작가로서 자신의 문화적 정체성에 기반한 작업을 선보인다. 초기 작업인 <우리, 식민화된 사람들> 시리즈는 식민시대에 원주민 조상들이 당했던 고통에 대한 분노의 감정을 표현했다. <플런더미 베이비> 시리즈는 프리콜럼비안 도자기를 차용하고, 과장된 표정을 짓는 작가의 얼굴을 새겨넣은 도발적인 작품들로 구성되어있다. 이 시리즈는 과거를 깨어나게 하기 위해 역사에 개입해서 고고학적 유물처럼 여겨지는 프리콜럼비안 도자를 현재로 소환한다. <코르푸스> 시리즈는 쿠스코의 성체 축제 행렬에 등장하는 15개의 성상을 재창조한 작품이다. 수백 년간 이어진 축제는 서구에서 유입된 천주교가 토착 문화와 혼성교배 된 신크레티즘의 양상을 보여주는데, 작가는 서구의 도상 아래 감춰져 있던 토착의 신적존재들을 해방하여 시각화했다. 벨라르데의 현대 도예 작품들은 과거에 대한 비판을 넘어 현재의 인식을 변화시키는 탈식민화를 도모하고 있다.
Abstract
This thesis analyzes three series of Kukuli Velarde's ceramic artworks that clearly demonstrate the decolonization. Velarde was born in Cusco, Peru, and currently works in Philadelphia, USA. She has won the grand prize at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale of South Korea in 2013. Her artworks based on the artist's cultural identity of the female artist from Latin America. In her early work We, the Colonized Ones series presents the anger at the agony of indigenous ancestors in colonial era. Plunderme Baby series appropriates Pre-Columbian ceramics and makes provocative work engraving the face of herself with exaggerated expressions. The series summons Pre-Columbian ceramics considered archaeological relics to the present, which intervenes the history to awaken the past. Corpus series recreates the 15 icons appeared at the Corpus Christi Festival in Cusco which has continued for hundreds years and shows aspects of Syncretism between Catholicism and indigenous culture. She visualizes it liberating the indigenous “entities” hidden under the Western icons. Velarde's contemporary ceramic artworks aim to be decolonized to change the perceptions of the present beyond criticism of the past.
