Abstract
Mexican ceramics has developed throughout 40 centuries. In ancient time, the unique formative beauty of Mexican ceramics was incomparable. However, under the influence of European culture flooding in the early colonial period, it suffered total confusion. Mexican culture experienced a severe process of being broken, mixed, merged and changed and, after all, began to develop its own originality. In such a process, ceramics also went through a significant change. It was the fateful mixture between the ancient Mexican tradition and Spanish tradition. The mixture of these cultures does not mean the complete disappearance of the original cultures. Some traditions have survived and some others are gradually disappearing. In the process of transition, the tradition of Mexican ceramics has been established. With regard to the main actors in the process of mixture resulting the tradition of Mexican ceramics, there have been a direct influence of Spain but the potters’ artistic sense are mainly imbued with ancient veins. That is, Mexican ceramics has been remodeled by Mexican potters on the basis of original ancient culture of Mexico and with outward form borrowed from Europe.
