Abstract
One of the most groundbreaking innovations in contemporary art is to create art pieces without images in forming the works and exhibition due to the expansion of new technologies and media. In the Ganzfeld series of James Turrell, utilizing the light sources, their spaces are the works and the arenas as a real world where viewers’ presence lead to perceptual experience. There is no specific focal point or image for viewers to perceive with their eyes in this experience. Instead of pure visuality, they are allowed to experience multiple layers of perception by being immersed into the space. The separation between the ‘viewing space’ and ‘sensing space’ in Turrell’s Ganzfeld occurs from the change of vantage points by moving spectators’ body, which generates the transition of the perception out of traditional act of ‘seeing’ and visual perception. It requires a new alternative discourse of perceptibility, and the concept of ‘seeing-in’ of Richard Wolheim is applicable when it is modified as ‘sensing-in,’ which might be available to establish the methodology of perception in the media surroundings and spaces constructed with light, in terms of the bound of perception, the circumstance beyond image, multiple attentiveness and immersion.
