Abstract
Han, Jeong-Im. 2003. Effects of Formal Instruction on Liquid Accuracy: A Longitudinal Study. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 28-2, 185-206. This study assesses the role of formal instruction in the acquisition of the English /ɹ/ and /l/ by native Korean (NK) speakers. Specifically to see the long-term effect of the typical formal instruction on English pronunciation by Korean students, a theoretical instruction to explain the position-sensitive subtle phonetic differences on English liquids was provided to NK speakers, and the accuracy of their production of English liquids was evaluated by native English speakers at four different times. The results based on 13 NK speakers show that 1) a very short explicit training, not naturalistic learning, was effective in the improvement of late learners' L2 pronunciation and its effect was maintained for a long-term period; but 2) the results varied according to the speaker, and also phonological position each segment occurred, only partly supporting the previous proposals as to L1 interference. Based on the results of this study, L2 theories and pedagogical implications were discussed. (Konkuk University)
