Abstract

This study focused on science education practices in a Japanese kindergarten (yochien). The National Curriculum Standards for Japanese Yochien mainly focuses on a child-centered, play-based, free play approach, which are commonly used in Japanese yochien schools. This study reports on two kinds of activities related to learning about water. One activity was based on the traditional free play approach and the other activity entails a series of teacher-initiated experiments which is new to Japanese preschool education. Contrasting the two activities, differences and shared features between the two activities were examined. Although free play could stimulate children’s scientific ability, it was discussed that teacher-initiated activities could effectively facilitate children’s learning and make up for the weakness in free play.
