Abstract

This study analyzed whether automobile insurance premiums in South Korea rationally reflect accident risk. To this end, an empirical analysis was conducted on the statistical characteristics associated with the rational expectations hypothesis that have not been addressed in previous studies. The methodologies of Shiller (1981) and Mankiw, Romer and Shapiro (1985) were employed, and the analysis was carried out by categorizing insurance premiums by powertrain type and by coverage type. The results showed that, unlike internal combustion engine vehicles, premiums for eco-friendly vehicles do not exhibit the statistical characteristics consistent with the rational expectations hypothesis. In terms of coverage type, it was also difficult to conclude that bodily injury liability premiums display these statistical characteristics. Taken together, these findings suggest that in general government intervention in automobile insurance premiums has not been excessive, while also indicating the need to reassess the insurance premium structures for eco-friendly vehicles and liability coverage.
