사진과 구술을 통해 본 민중의 삶과 터전

초록

본 연구는 사진과 구술의 결합을 통해 20세기 고난의 역사를 온 몸으로 체험한 민중들의 삶과 터전을 해석해 보고자 한다. 연구의 틀은 세 가지 개념, 재현의 정치(politics of representation), 기억, 환대(hospitality)에 토대를 두고 있다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 소수의 사진과 간단한 이야기를 다루었기 때문에 특별한 내용 혹은 경향을 파악하는 것이 어렵다. 수학여행, 근로봉사, 졸업식 사진을 통해서 본 식민지 시대 초등학교의 재현은 단편적이고 간결한 반면 생애사 구술은 보다 다양한 모습을 보여 주고 있다. 둘째, 20세기 역사의 소용돌이 속에서 민중은 여러 지역을 이동하면서 고통스럽게 살아 왔다. 이것은 개인과 가족 혹은 집단의 정체성을 혼성적·유동적으로 만드는데 기여했을 것이다. 셋째, 해외 동포의 상당수는 고국에서도 그리고 타국에서도 환영받지 못하고, 스스로 자신들의 정체성을 의심하는 경우도 있다. 우리는 해외 동포를 배타적이고 차별적인 민족 혹은 국가의 이념이 아닌 존중받아야 할 인간으로 환대하고 정당하게 자리매김해야 할 것이다.

Abstract

This study interprets people’s life and its place in the 20th century much turbulent through the systemic combination of photography and oral history. Its framework is built on three concepts, the politics of representation, memory, and hospitality. The results are summarized in the followings. Firstly, it is not easy for me to find particular contents or trends because a few pictures and oral histories are examined. The representation of the pictures expressed the elementary school in a Japanese colonial period is simple while oral histories toward the elementary school are various and complex. Secondly, people’s life moved among regions or countries were so much painful. It is assumed that such a life causes the identity of person and his/her family to be dynamic and hybrid. Thirdly, many Koreans living in foreign countries are not respectful both in their homeland and in their presently living countries, and they are not sure about their identity by themselves. They are hospitably accepted as an independent person, not as an ethnic group and nationality exclusively operated.
