Abstract
Clothes are social phenomena and have been changed from the beginning. Butmen's suits have stayed virtually the same for more than two hundreds years. Thestaying power of male tailoring shows how visual form can have its own authority, its own self - perpetuating symbolic and emotional force. In this essay, I am trying to say that male suits from 19 century have beenconsidered as the idealized male ego, which conceals the position of their body, being shown by other people and women and that this is totally a philosophicalmeconnaisance. Generally speaking, women's dresses are the sign of the vanity ofwomen's mind and life, while men's suits are intelligent, sublime, perfect, reflecting men's life and reason. As a result, women and women's clothes are seenand evaluated by men's gaze from everywhere. However, men's suits that wereconsidered as the symbol of reason are also erotically as well as politicallyappealing. Because the classic male tailoring design motifs are suggesting the forceand clarity of Greek ideal body of Man. Against our expectation, suits areobviously not inexpressive. In their form, suits express a confident adult sexualmasculinity. The suit reflects purposeful development and has the modern look ofcarefully simplified dynamic abstraction that has its own strong sexual appeal. Then why is it told that the suits have not sexual appeal as the women's dress do?The philosophical meconnaisance of dress(suits) and their own body and self, inother words, men's philosophy have considered that their body were not seen by others and women, because, they thought, their suits are the ideal and standard ofhuman being like the baby ego in the mirror - stage of J. Lacan. The suits makesthem meconnaitre that their own body image is perfect and not seen by others, which was absolutely not true.
