Abstract

This study aims to analyze the philosophical thinking in academic texts that focused on the metaphorical characteristics of fashion and the art of dressing in order to search for the viewpoint of writing on the subject of dressing and fashion. For this research, a qualitative study was conducted to analyze the point of view and writing style of these philosophical texts. I analyzed the 19th century publication <Sartor Resartus> by Thomas Carlyle, the 21st century publication <Fashion: a Philosophy> by Lars Svendsen, and research papers by Dho Seung-Youn and Yeon Hee-Weon. As a result of this study, it became clear that dressing and fashion were used in writing as effective metaphors that can be thought of as connecting and combining concepts that have been overlooked by most philosophers. The texts revealed the close link between the human soul, the body, and clothing, and showed that inclusion of dressing and fashion could expand philosophical thinking and become a major source of extending the scope of writing. Even though fashion is an everyday part of life, this study has reaffirmed that critical discussions on this topic have also always been a part of academic philosophy. Dressing or fashion is naturally connected to all disciplines, and is the common ground where various subject matters converge. Dressing or Fashion is a source for writing that creates synergy through the convergence of disciplines. Interests in human research in dressing and fashion have continued through the ages. It can also be thought of by philosophers as a social metaphor and essential in human research. People bring dressing or fashion as a critical object and also use them as a tool to present any social prejudice, or they use dressing and fashion as a leading essence metaphorically representing social ideology, social issues, movement, or revolutions. The use of dressing and fashion as a metaphor eventually represents ourselves and society and it is thought by several philosophers as the best inspirations to express their thoughts and insights.
