태권도를 통한 이슬람권 선교의 여정: 밀의 '사회학적 상상력'을 중심으로

본 연구는 태권도 선교사인 저자가 이슬람권에 어떻게 비교적 쉽게 진입, 정착하고 그 사회에 잘 통합되어 사역을 전개할 수 있었는지에 대한 고찰이다. 저자는 밀스의 사회학적 상상력을 발휘하여 여러 사회통합 이론 및 상징자본, 문화자본 그리고 사회자본이라는 다양한 형태의 자본 이론을 통하여 이를 탐구한다. 태권도 종주국 사범이라는 상징성이 부여하는 상징자본과 태권도라는 문화를 체화한 문화자본의 소유 더 나아가 상징자본과 문화자본으로 인해 사회적 연결망을 확장하게 되는 사회자본을 획득하게 되므로 이슬람권 진입과 정착 그리고 지역사회에 안정적으로 통합되어 선교사역이 수월하게 전개되었다는 것을 밝힌다. 이 연구를 위한 방법론으로 첫째로, 문헌연구를 두 번째로, 사회과학의 질적 방법론의 하나인 자기민속지학(autoethnography)을 채택하여 저자 자신의 경험적 서사를 사회학 이론으로 분석, 해석하여 결론을 도출한다. 요컨대, 저자는 스포츠 사회학이라는 렌즈를 통하여 태권도 선교가 창의적 접근이 필요한 이슬람권 선교에 교두보 역할을 할 수 있음을 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
This study is an examination of how the author, a Taekwondo missionary, was able to enter, settle, and integrate into the Islamic world with relative ease. The author uses Mills’ sociological imagination to explore this through various theories of social integration and theories of different forms of capital: symbolic, cultural, and social capital. It is shown that the possession of symbolic capital, which is conferred by the symbolism of being a Korean Taekwondo master, cultural capital, which embodies the culture of Taekwondo, as well as the acquisition of social capital, which expands the network of social connections, facilitated the entry into the Islamic world, settlement and integration into the local community, and the development of missionary work. In terms of methodology, this study employs firstly, literature review, and secondly, autoethnography, which is a qualitative methodology in the social sciences, in order to analyze and interpret the author’s own empirical narrative with sociological theory, then draw conclusions. In short, through the lens of the sociology of sports, the author aims to reveal how Taekwondo mission can serve as a bridgehead for Islamic mission that require a creative approach.
