이란인의 종교분포에 관한 연구

Analysis of Religious Population Distribution in Iran: Government Statistics, Immigrant Data, and Reality

초록

본 연구는 이란 정부의 공식 통계, 이란계 이주자 데이터, 그리고 다양한분석방법을종합하여이란의실제종교인구분포에대한심층 분석을 시도하였다. 이란 정부의 공식 종교인구 통계에 따르면, 무슬림 인구는 99.6% 이상이며, 기독교인 인구는 0.2%가 되지 못한다. 시아 파 이슬람 종주국의 면모를 보여주는 듯하다. 그러나 개종자를 포함한 이란 기독교인의 수가 10~300만 명 이상이라는 주장도 있다. 그러나 이와 관련된 구체적인 근거나 통계 자료는 부족하다. 이란의 실제 종 교인구 분포 현황은 어떠할까? 이란의 무슬림 인구는 절대적인가? 기 독교인 인구 비율은 극소수인가? 본 연구는 이란과 영국, 캐나다, 호주 의 인구주택총조사 자료를 바탕으로, 이란계 이주자와 이란의 실제 종 교인구 분포를 추론하였다. 이란계 이주자 가운데 무슬림 인구 비율은 30~50%에 불과했다. 기독교인 비율은 5~11%에 달했다. 무종교 인구 는 20~40%였다. 이런 현실은 이란계 이민 사회에만 국한된 현상으로 볼 수는 없다. 이런 분석을 바탕으로 한다면, 이란의 현실속의 무슬림 은 50%, 기독교인은 5~10% 정도로 추론할 수 있다. 이란의 종교인구 분포통계를 단순인용하는 시선과 태도의 개선이 필요하다.

Abstract

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the actual re- ligious population distribution in Iran by synthesizing official statistics from the Iranian government, data on Iranian im- migrants, and various analytical methods. According to official Iranian government statistics, Mus- lims account for over 99.6 percent of the population, while Christians make up less than 0.2 percent. These statistics re- inforce the image of Iran as a Shia Islamic theocracy. How- ever, there are also claims, often unsubstantiated by concrete evidence or reliable data, that the number of Christians in Iran, including converts, could be between 10 and 30 million. This study aims to infer the actual religious population distribution in Iran by analyzing the religious demographics of Iranian immigrants based on census data from Iran, the UK, Canada, and Australia. Key findings concerning the re- ligious population distribution of Iranian immigrants show that there are 30 to 50 percent Muslims, 5 to 11 percent Christians, and 20 to 40 percent non-religious. Regarding the inference of the actual religious population in Iran, there are 50 percent Muslims and 5 to 10 percent Christians. This study offers a new perspective on the religious pop- ulation distribution in Iran and provides a more accurate and realistic understanding of Iranian society. The study also ex- pects to raise awareness of religious diversity and to reduce prejudice and discrimination.
