Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study of God of process theology (PT) and openness theology (OT). This comparative study deals with how PT and OT understand God in their fields of theology proper, divine unchangeability, relationship with creatures, omniscience, omnipotence, and love, etc. Then, it presents the similarities and dissimilarities of the two theologies. PT, based on scientific results of organic atomism, understands God as a Being who has two poles; a primordial pole that is eternal and unchanging, and a consequent pole that is temporal and changing. According to PT, God is changeable in relation to His creation. God is directly influenced by His created world. God changes as the world changes. PT denies God’s immutability, omniscience, omnipotence that traditional theism affirms. OT, unlike traditional theism, understands that God is an eternal Being who changes. It argues that God has no infallible future knowledge of man’s free choices and so has no complete control of the world. OT contends that God can exist without the world, and yet He can be changed by the response of man’s free will. According to OT, God is dynamic, not static, in relation to the world. Both PT and OT agree that even God cannot know the future until the future is determined by man’s free will. Thus, both theologies say that God can fail because God does not unilaterally decide but depend on man’s free choices. Both theologies modify the paradigm of traditional theology, emphasizing God’s relational aspects and man’s free will. The difference between PT and OT is this: PT begins its theology from philosophy while OT begins with evangelical theology. PT and OT differs in understanding attributes of God, such as divine immutability and relation to His creation. PT sees there would be no God without the world and God constantly changes. OT sees that God’s existence is independently possible and can change in response to man’s free choices though His being remains the same. These two theologies have modified and reinterpreted traditional theism. They distorted views of God’s glory, greatness, and goodness.
