Abstract

This article examines the impromptu poems of Sonwa Choi, Seok-hang (1654-1724) and examines aspects of his poetry and literary competence. Impromptu poetry is a form of poetry that has the characteristic of expressing emotions seen, heard, or felt on the spot where you felt Siheung, and it enables us to examine the poet’s inner mind and poetic capabilities because the poet's emotions and literary capabilities are revealed intact. Improvisation comes out of the mouth without any draft, so it can show the strongest sense of realism and impromptu speaking. Most of the improvisation of Sonwa has the typical characteristics of improvisation. In addition, most of Sonwa’s improvisation poems were created as Chileonyulsi, which have many difficult formal restrictions, so we can guess his proficiency in writing poetry. We will look into Sonwa’s improvisation by dividing it into three aspects which are “purification of mind by relishing relaxation”, “revelation of poetic excitement for entertainment,” and “skepticism and grief to himself about his career at a government post.” In addition, we will look at how he maximized realism by using sensual images and how he described scenes by using various metaphorical methods. Through this study, one side of Sonwa’s poetry, which is not well known, is examined. Sonwa was active in enjoying poetry and expressing his feelings on the spot, so it was possible to confirm the aspect of a poet with the ability to write poetry skillfully using various rhetoric.
