본 논문은 이동통신과 방송의 융합을 서비스 현황과 기술 측면에서 이동통신이 제공하는 방송 서비스와 이동통신을 이용한 양방향 방송 서비스로 나누어 기술한다. 이동통신의 방송 기술은 SMS(Short Message Service)에서 발전한 저속 데이터의 CBS(Cell Broadcast short message service)와 고속 데이터 제공이 가능한 3GPP MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service), 3GPP2 BCMCS (Broadcast/Multicast Service)가 있다. 본 논문에서는 각 기술에 대한 표준화 동향, 서비스 내용, 시스템 구성요소 등을 살펴본다. 또한, 이동통신을 이용한 양방향 방송 서비스 측면에서 지상파 DAB 방송과 위성 DAB 방송을 유럽, 일본 등의 사례를 통해 살펴본다. 현재, 유럽에선 지상파 DAB와 GSM/GPRS 이동통신 단말기를 이용한 다운로드 서비스 솔루션을 개발하여 제공하고 있으며 일본에서는 통신 기능을 갖춘 지상파 DAB 단말기 시제품을 개발하여 양방향 데이터 방송 서비스를 시연한 상태다. 국내에서는 이동통신 복합형 단말기를 이용한 위성 DAB 연동 서비스를 위하여 개발 진행 중이다.
Abstract
In this paper, we describe the convergence of mobile communication and broadcasting service from the service providers' point of view. And we divide it into two classes; the broadcasting service which is provided by mobile communication service providers over the mobile communication networks and the interactive data broadcasting service which is provided by broadcasting service providers using the up-link channel in mobile communication networks. As the mobile communication technologies for broadcasting, we consider CBS(Cell Broadcast short message service) for low data rate service and 3GPP MBMS(Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service), 3GPP2 BCMCS(Broadcast/Multicast Service) for high data rate service. We present the standardization status, service feature and system configuration as to respective technologies. And the examples of convergence technologies in Europe, Japan and etc. are also presented to show the interactive data broadcasting service in terrestrial and satellite DAB systems. In Europe, a download service based on terrestrial DAB was developed and a handset for terrestrial DAB with a function of mobile communication was demonstrated in Japan. In Korea, a handset for mobile communication with a function of satellite DAB service is now under development.
