Abstract
Luther’s concept of the “hidden God” (Deus absconditus) plays a very important role that is related to the core of his theology. He explains the concept in his first lectures on the Psalms at the beginning of his theological career, and he continues to endorse the notion in his mature theology. The notion can be treated very well when it is investigated from a trinitarian perspective. Its relationship with God the Father shows the sovereignty of God. The hidden God is the incomprehensible essence of God. He is a fearful God who does not care whether the sinner dies. This God, however, becomes a God of comfort when he becomes the visible God through the prayer and faith of the believer. The relationship between the hidden God and God the Son clearly demonstrates the paradoxical aspect of Luther’s theology. Luther describes Jesus Christ as “the crucified and hidden God.” Only “the theologian of the cross” can recognize this God through their sufferings. The hidden God of Luther’s theology also can be examined from the pneumatological perspective. The Holy Spirit reveals the hidden Word which is the Word of faith. The hidden Spirit works for the salvation of the believer secretly in the church that is the hidden people of God. Luther distinguishes between the [hidden] Spirit as “God in his divine nature and substance” and the Spirit as “the gift given to us.” In conclusion, the inherent meaning of the hidden God in Luther’s theology can be perceived best from the above trinitarian perspective.
