원형과 모형(Image and Figure) - ‘복음전도’와 ‘사회참여’의 관계를 이해하기 위한 하나의 해석학적 구조본 논문의 목적은‘복음전도’와 ‘사회참여’ 사이의 관계성을 이해하도록 조망해줄 수 있는 하나의 해석적 틀을 성경으로부터 찾아 제안하는 데 있다. 한편에서는 복음전도와 사회참여를 동일한 차원의 것으로 간주하여, 그 둘 사이의 구별이 무의미하다고 주장하는 반면, 다른 한편에서는 복음전도와 사회참여를 이원적으로 분리하여 그 어떠한 내적인 관계도 없는 것으로 설정한다. 이 두 입장은 복음전도와 사회참여 사이의 관계성을‘같음’ 혹은 ‘다름’이라는 틀로 바라본 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 복음전도와 사회참여의 관계에 단순한 ‘같음’ 혹은 ‘다름’의 해석적 틀을 적용할 때, 여러 문제들이 야기된다. 본 논문은 복음전도와 사회참여의 관계를 이해하도록 도와줄 수 있는, 단순한 같음 혹은 다름의 해석적 틀을 넘어서는, 새롭게 관계성을 읽는 하나의‘원리’를 찾고자 한다. 같음에는 구별이 없고 다름에는 분리만 있다면, ‘같음과 다름’의 틀을 넘어서는 곳에 ‘구별되나 분리되지 않는’ 관계성의 가능성이 열린다. 본 논문은 ‘같음과 다름’너머의 해석적 틀을 발견하여 복음전도와 사회참여의 관계성을 조망하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 먼저, 한국교회사 분야에서 복음전도와 사회참여의 관계성을, “신앙의 내연과 외연의 구조”로써 이론화한 연구를 소개한다. 한국교회역사의 현상적 분석을 통해, “복음의 내연은 사회참여로 자연스럽게 외연된다”는 ‘복음전도와 사회참여의 내연-외연의 틀’을 제시한 것이다. 그러나 본 논문은 더욱 보편적인 차원에서, 성경 속에 이미 복음전도와 사회참여의 관계를 조명하는,‘구별되나 분리되지 않는 관계’의 원리가 제시되어 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 즉 복음전도와 사회참여의 관계성을 이해하게 해줄 해석의 틀, 하나의 해석학적 안경 - 특별히 단순한 같음과 다름의 관계를 넘어서는 관계를 보게 해줄 - 을 성경에서 발견하여 제안하는 것이다. 이를 통해,‘사회참여가 복음전도와 동일한 것이 아니라면, 우리는 사회참여를 무엇이라고 부를 수 있는지’, 그리고 ‘복음전도와 사회참여의 관계를 어떻게 성경적 언어로 더욱 명료하게 표현할 수 있는지’에 대해 답해보고자 한다. 본 논문은 결론적으로 ‘원형과 모형’(image and figure)이라는 관계성에 대한 성경의 언어와 원리를 통해서,‘사회참여는 완성될 복음전도의 모형’이라고 명명할 수 있다고 제안한다. 따라서 모형이 원형에게서 나와 원형에 참여하듯, 사회참여는 복음전도의 목적에서 나와 복음전도에 참여해야 함을 제시한다. 또한 모형이 원형 그 자체는 아닐지라도, 그 모형(figure)이 원형을 따르고 있는 조건 안에서, 원형과 같다고 인정(justification)해주는 것과 마찬가지로, 사회참여가 복음전도 그 자체는 아닐지라도, 복음전도에 에워싸인 조건 안에서, 복음전도와 같은 것이라고 ‘인정’해 줄 수 있음을 제시한다. 이를 통해, 마치 원형과 모형이 서로 구별되는 것이지만 분리되지 않는 것과 같이, 복음전도와 사회참여는 ‘서로 구별되면서도 동시에 서로 분리되지 않는 관계’임을 보인다. 또한 모형이 원형의 이미지를 대변(represent)하듯, 사회참여는 완성될 복음전도의 이미지, 즉 앞으로 올 하나님의 나라의 이미지를 세상에 대변하는 역할을 함을 제시한다.
Abstract
Image and Figure - A hermeneutical structure for understanding the relationship between 'evangelism' and 'social engagement' This paper aims to provide an interpretive framework from the Bible for understanding and examining the relationship between evangelism and social engagement. One side of the debate has argued that evangelism and social engagement are one and the same thing, making the distinction irrelevant, while the other side has argued that the relationship between the two requires intentional integration, which presupposes that they were originally separate. However, it has been pointed out that there are dangers and problems in this simple same or different relationship between evangelism and social engagement. This paper argues that within missiology, there is yet to be a 'principle' that helps us to recognise clearly the relationship between evangelism and social responsibility or a ‘theoretical basis’ for articulating the structural relationship between evangelism and social responsibility. This paper first introduces a study of Korean church history that provides a good model for explaining how the gospel manifests itself in social behaviour, or how the gospel gradually leads to social change. It is a phenomenological finding that those who receive the gospel after evangelism engage in socially transformative behaviour, through interpretation of historical examples. This paper, however, aims to go beyond the historical findings through examples, trying to suggest the principles that must have produced such historical examples. This paper suggests that an understanding of‘figure and image’will allow us to more accurately and specifically articulate what social engagement is, if it is not evangelism, then what it can be called, and what the relationship between evangelism and social engagement is. In conclusion, through a relational theory of image and figure, this paper suggests that social responsibility is a "figure of the completion of evangelism," so that social responsibility follows the evangelism and can be “justified and regarded” as something like "evangelism," even though it is not evangelism itself, on the condition that social responsibility participates in evangelism. Through this interpretive tool, the relationship between social engagement and evangelism is shown to be both distinct and inseparable.
