Abstract
This study investigates how the Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival transforms local prehistoric cultural resources into a glocal brand by converting locality into differentiated symbolic capital within the context of globalization and digital media. Drawing on Bourdieu’s notion of symbolic capital and Robertson’s theory of glocalization, the festival is approached not as a tourism event but as a cultural practice that produces and re-articulates sign systems. A qualitative case study was conducted using documentary sources, policy and evaluation reports, and visual media such as posters, social networking content, and promotional videos. Based on Peirce’s triadic model of signs, the analysis reveals how the festival’s symbols, spatial settings, and experiential programs signify the historical reality of Paleolithic culture and are interpreted by residents, visitors, and media to generate brand identity through semiosis. The findings show that Yeoncheon has developed the glocal brand image of “the city of the Paleolithic era” by expanding the archetypal narrative of “the first human life”through experiential and digital media content, while participatory governance has strengthened the brand’s authenticity and sustainability. Comparing the Seokjang-ri site in Gongju with Les Eyzies in France highlights several strategies for branding Yeoncheon through the Paleolithic Festival: enhancing a public-archaeology participation model, adopting a three-stage experience–learning–diffusion strategy, integrating digital cultural-industry approaches, developing a unified brand narrative, and introducing seven strategic planning elements.
