Abstract

Donaldson and Kymlicka recognize animals membership of the political community in Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights, they give domesticated animals citizenship, wild animals sovereignty, and liminal animals denizenship depending on the political relations we have with each animal. This paper will explore whether the claim that domesticated animals are citizens is justified. Donaldson and Kymlicka first accept the inviolable rights of animals in the animal rights theory, and even argue for active rights arising from political relations with animals. Then they present the three functions that citizenship must have as nationality, popular sovereignty, and democratic political agency, and say that animals can exercise them. They use the analogy with severe intellectual disabilities for it: the disabilites can exercise their subjective agency to participate in politics through trustees who know well their subjective good, and the same goes for domesticated animals. I would argue that this 'trust model' applies to disabled, but not to domesticated animals. In this model, trusters must rely on trustees who know their subjective good to exercise their subjective good, but human guardians cannot know the subjective good of domesticated animals. In the end, Donaldson and Kymlicka's attempts to recognize domestic animals as citizens fail.
