Abstract
The purpose of this study is to show that the effect of leading brand’s market performance on consumers’evaluation of a follower brand’s extension. In addition, we investigated the mediating role of the perceived category similarity between the parent category and the extension category and the moderating role of the leading brand’s market status. To test our predictions, we conducted a 2(leading brand’s market performance: success/failure) × 2(leading brand’s market status: superior/inferior) between-subjects design. The results of this study confirmed that consumers evaluated the extension of the leading brand more positively when it was successful than when it was failure. As we expected, the category similarity between the parent category and the extension category mediated the relationship of the leading brand’s market performance and the evaluation of the follower brands’ extension. We also examined whether the leading brand’s market status influenced the evaluation of a follower brand’s extension. We found that if the leading brand was successful, consumers provided more favorable responses to the follower brand‘s extension when it was superior(vs. inferior brand). However, if the leading brand was failure, there was no differences regardless of the leading brand’s market status. The results provide the following managerial implications. For example, marketers or brand managers for the following brand have to decide to extend their brand or not by considering the performance of the leading brand extension in the marketing. The success of the leading brand extension would enhance the category similarity between the parent brand category and the extension category which leads positive market environment. Thus, the following brand would consider the brand extension as one of the growth strategies. Especially, the category similarity would be increased when the leading brand is a superior brand(vs. an inferior brand). Consequently, it would be more effective for the following brand to extend its brand more aggressively with similar brand extension to the leading brand. however, the failure of the leading brand extension would lead strong skepticism on the following brand extension in the same product category. Thus, in this case, it would be better for the following brand to extend its brand after it have remarkable differentiation compared to the leading brand extension. Or, it might be better choice to abandon its plan for the following brand extension.
