근대의 인간중심주의는 인간을 순수한 정신으로서의 개별적 주체로 보고 동물, 식물, 사물 등 여타의 비인간과 존재론적으로 상이한 영역에 위치시킨다. 이에 따르면 세계에 변화와 차이를 가져올 수 있는 행위성은 인간의 고유한 권한과 능력으로 제한된다. 그러나 인간과 비인간의 얽힘과 함께 되어감을 긍정하며 인간중심주의를 넘어서려는 포스트휴머니즘은 물질적 전회를 통해 물질은 다른 물질과 영향을 주고받으며 어떠한 효과를 만들고 상황을 바꾸는 힘을 갖고 있음에 주목한다. 이 글은 물질적 전회를 따라 나무와 인간의 얽힘, 그리고 상황적 지식을 탐구한 과정의 산물이다. 나는 목공방에서 현장연구를 수행하며 만난 북미산 오크(oak)를 통해 교육적 실천에서 물질성이 갖는 의미를 상황적 지식에 초점을 두고 탐구하였다. 나는 오크와 함께 목공방의 안과 밖을 넘나들며 상황적 지식의 경계가 어떻게 생성되고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 지금-여기의 오크가 만들어지는 과정에는 나무와 인간, 그리고 수많은 존재들의 마주침과 뒤섞임이 있으며 이 가운데 다양한 앎과 배움이 실천되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이 글은 상황적 지식의 생성에 참여하는 물질의 힘을 드러내고, 교육적 실천에서 물질성이 갖는 의미를 논의하고 있다는데 그 의의가 있다.
Abstract
Modern humanism views human beings as individual subjects of immaterial mind and places them in ontologically different domains from other non-humans such as animals, plants, and objects. According to this, the agency that can make a change and difference in the world are limited to human’s unique powers and abilities. Posthumanism, however, affirms the entanglement and dependance between human and non-human, notices that matter could affect and be affected by other matters, create certain effects, and change the situation. This kind of new approach on matter is called as ‘the material turn.’ This article explores situated knowledge in the entanglement of trees and humans by following the material turn. I explored the meaning of materiality in educational practice, focusing on situated knowledge, through North American oak I met while conducting a field study in a woodworking workshop. I traveled in and out of the woodworking workshop with the oak to see how the boundaries of situated knowledge are being created. Through this, I was able to understand that in the process of making the oak in situ, there are entanglements of trees between human beings and among them various knowledge and learning are practiced. This article discusses the implications of materiality in educational practice by revealing the agency of matters participating in the creation of situated knowledge.
