Abstract

Political Implications of China's North-East Project Jun, Byoung-kon This paper is aimed to review Chinese political intention on North-East Project and its implication toward the Korean peninsula. To fulfill the above- mentioned purposes, this paper beings with analyses and summarization regarding the development and its major research outcomes of the North- East Project since the year 2002. An internal unity for national security, social stability in Northeast Asia, and preparation to develop a foundation for Northeast Asian region were summarized as the main political intentions towards the project.Considering the Chinese intention toward the project, it cannot be evaluated as a direct attempt to influence toward the Korean peninsula because the project is more likely aimed to deal with China's internal, defensive, and corresponding features. Regardless of an intentional or unintentional attempt by the Chinese, the project can be considered as aggression or hegemony over the Korean peninsula in mid or long-term. Therefore, immediate academic, as well as realistic corresponding measures to prevent the project's negative impact over the Korean peninsula should be followed. However, South Korea does not need to take harsh measures against the project, which may result in losing a chance to even have its positive impact.
