「前赤壁賦」의 ‘斗牛之間’과 ‘白露橫江’에 대한 小考

본고는 소동파의 작품인「전적벽부」에서 ‘白露橫江’에 대한 문제점을 제기하였다. 이 구절은 문학적인 표현을 고려하더라도 이치에 맞지 않는 점이 있다. ‘白露’가 ‘물안개’로 해석이 되었을 경우 ‘물빛이 하늘에 맞닿았다[水光接天]’라거나 ‘물속에 비치는 달그림자를 치다[擊空明兮]’라고 표현한 구절과 배치된다. 그리고 白露가 ‘흰 이슬’로 해석이 되는 경우도 음력 7월 16일은 이슬이 내리기 한참 전이므로 합리적인 표현이 아니다. 이런 이유로 ‘白露’에 대한 기존의 번역은 ‘흰 이슬’, ‘안개’, ‘白露’, ‘뿌연 물기운’ 등 다양하다. 이를 규명하기 위해 먼저 ‘斗牛之間’의 의미를 명확하게 고찰하고자 하였다. ‘斗牛’에 대한 기존 번역도 분분했지만, 면밀하게 검토한 결과 ‘남두성’과 ‘견우성’을 가리킨다고 할 수 있다. 남두성과 견우성이 음력 7월 7일 자정 무렵에 하늘 가장 높은 곳에서 관측되는 사실로 미루어 볼 때, 소식은 적벽 아래서 뱃놀이하다가 자정이 지난 새벽에 남두성과 견우성을 보았을 것으로 유추할 수 있다. 또한 ‘橫江’의 주체가 시각과 청각에 의해 인식할 수 있는 사물인 점과 曹操의 ‘月明星稀 烏鵲南飛’ 구절을 인용한 점, 「후적벽부」의 ‘孤鶴橫江’ 구절과의 호응 관계 등을 고려하면 ‘白露橫江’의 표현에 문제점이 있음을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper raises the issue of ‘白露橫江’ in Su Dongpo’s work “前赤壁賦”. Even considering the literary expression, this passage does not make sense. If ‘白露’ is interpreted as ‘water fog’, it conflicts with phrases such as ‘the light of the water touches the sky’ or ‘strikes the moon’s shadow reflected in the water’. Furthermore, if 白露 is interpreted as ‘white dew’, it is not a reasonable expression because the 16th day of the 7th lunar month is long before the dew falls. For this reason, existing translations of ‘白露’ include ‘white dew’, ‘fog’, ‘白露’, and ‘hazy water air’. In order to clarify this, I first wanted to examine the meaning of ‘斗牛之間’. The existing translations of ‘斗牛’ were also varied, but a closer examination shows that it refers to ‘Namduseong’ and ‘Gyeonwooseong.’ Judging from the fact that Namduseong and Gyeonwooseong are observed at the highest point in the sky around midnight on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar, it can be inferred that Su Shi saw Namduseong and Gyeonwooseong at dawn after midnight while boating under Red Cliffs. Furthermore, considering that the subject of ‘橫江’ is an object that can be recognized by sight and hearing, that it cites Cao Cao’s phrase ‘月明星稀 烏鵲南飛,’ and that it has a corresponding relationship with the phrase ‘孤鶴橫江’ in 「후적벽부」, it can be seen that there is a problem with the expression ‘白露橫江.’
