Abstract

This study examines research trends, knowledge structures, and research gaps in sports cheerleading studies in Korea by analyzing journal articles and master’s and doctoral theses that directly addressed sports cheerleading. Of 84 initially identified publications, 70 met the inclusion criteria. After adjusting for five confirmed thesis-to-journal derivative relationships, 65 unique studies were used to analyze research participants, methods, domains, and temporal changes. The findings show that research output has increased in recent years and that studies have focused on students, general participants, and athletes, while coaches, teams, and organizations have received limited attention. Quantitative research was the most common methodological approach, followed by qualitative and literature-based studies, whereas mixed-methods research remained rare. Sport psychology and coaching constituted the largest research domain, followed by culture, history and arts, performance and sport science, school physical education and pedagogy, health and safety, policy, administration and industry, and ethics and human rights. Temporal analysis indicates a shift from an early emphasis on performance and physical function toward psychological, coaching, relational, educational, and cultural concerns. The principal research gap is therefore not simply the scarcity of studies in particular topics, but a structural imbalance in which individual-level research is more developed than research on coaches, organizations, governance, rights, and institutional environments. Future studies should adopt multilevel approaches and examine coaching professionalism, athlete protection, organizational governance, policy, and the cultural circulation of Korean sports cheerleading through media, international competitions, and digital platforms. These findings provide a basis for interdisciplinary and Hallyu-oriented research on Korean sports cheerleading.
