Abstract
This study examined the effects of personalized exercise prescriptions on health-related and functional fitness in adults (19–64 years) and older adults (65+ years) using the Korea National Fitness 100 dataset. A total of 7,428 participants (adults: n = 4,835; older adults: n = 2,593) who completed at least two fitness assessments and subsequent exercise prescriptions in 2024 were analyzed. Health-related fitness included handgrip strength, muscular endurance, VO2max, and flexibility. Functional fitness comprised agility and power for adults, and balance and coordination for older adults. Paired-sample t-tests were used to examine pre- and post-intervention changes. Adults demonstrated significant improvements in body composition, handgrip strength, muscular endurance, VO2max, flexibility, agility, and power (all p < .05). Older adults showed significant enhancements in strength, muscular endurance, VO2max, flexibility, balance, and coordination (all p < .05). Age-specific, personalized exercise prescriptions effectively improve both health-related and functional fitness in adults and older adults. These findings provide empirical support for tailored exercise programs and inform national health promotion strategies, particularly for maintaining functional fitness and preventing age-related decline in older adults.
