‘그저’의 담화 기능: 고려말과 강원도 양양 지역어에서

Abstract

There are very few examples of geujeo in the spoken discourse in all of the dialects of South Korea except Yangyang dialect of Gangweon Province, Jeju dialect and Goryeo dialect of Central Asia. The Goryeo dialect is very unique in its high frequency of geujeo, where speakers use this word every fifty seconds. The adverb geujeo shows several contextual meanings in spoken discourse. We can find its basic meaning in contrastive discourse, where geujeo means to select a following item, rather than a previous one. From the basic meaning, four pragmatic meanings are derived, which are 'nothing but', 'emphatic', 'negative implication', and 'elaboration'. While geujeo in Yangyang dialect is used as indicated above, Goryeo dialect has an additional pragmatic meaning, which is the main reason for its high frequency in this dialect. In terms of grammaticalization, geujeo in Goryeo dialect is more grammaticalized and more polysemous than that of Yangyang dialect, which also contributes to its high frequency.
