This study aims to analyze Korean newspaper articles using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and to confirm the need for developing intercultural competency assessment tasks for immigrants in Korea. To this end, a total of 422 newspaper articles were selected from five major Korean media outlets, with each article containing both the terms “foreigner” and “culture,” along with one or more of the following: “difference,” “conflict,” “discrimination,” or “prejudice.” Moreover, this study follows the procedures of CDA, analyzing the articles in three stages: description, interpretation, and explanation. As a result, this study confirms the need for both inhabitants and immigrants in Korea to undergo intercultural competency assessments. In particular, for immigrants, the assessment should ① include an evaluation of cultural knowledge, ② assess the ability to handle cultural conflicts, and ③ develop scenario-based assessment tasks.
