Abstract
The aim of this study was to test the mediation effect of contest-orientation between psychological needs satisfaction and pro-and-antisocial functioning in competition-oriented activities given in physical education (PE) context. Grounded in contest orientation theory (Shield et al., 2016), we intend to provide educationally-meaningful implications to PE practices. The study design was cross-sectional. We conducted a paper-and-pencil survey with middle-and-high school students (N=324; male=170; female=154) in the metropolitan area, Korea. Analyses show that the mediation effect of contest-orientation was statistically significant in the relationship between psychological needs satisfaction and social behaviors in PE class. Specifically, the relationship between psychological needs satisfaction and prosocial behavior was partially mediated by the contest-orientation for partnership among students during sport-based competitive activities in PE, while the mediation effect of contest-orientation for war was not significant in the relation between psychological needs satisfaction and antisocial behavior. In addition, both the partner and the war orientations were significant predictors of prosocial behavior and antisocial behavior in PE. The competition is an educationally-important component for social functioning and development. Our findings showed that competition-based learning activities in PE can help students develop social function in desirable ways when it is delivered as partnership-oriented activity. In general, PE teachers’ motivating styles are important to support and satisfy students’ psychological needs positively corresponding to contest orientation-partner as the significant predictor of social functioning and development (altruistic behaviors).
