Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how basic psychological needs and motivational regulation relate to Physical Education (PE) grade. More specifically, this study was to verify the model of the cause and effect structure : The level of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) would more affect subordinate factors of motivation regulation such as intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, introjected regulation, external regulation, and amotivation. In turn, those variables would affect learners' PE grade. The participants of the study consisted of 277 third graders in B middle school located in I metropolitan city. The basic analysis was conducted on the collected data by PASW Statistics 18.0 program. Based on that, Structural equation modeling analysis was carried out on the data by AMOS 18.0 program. The result of the study can be summarized as follows. The subordinate factor, autonomy, had the positive effect on intrinsic motivation and identified regulation and had the negative effect on external regulation and amotivation. Competence affected intrinsic motivation, identified regulation and external regulation positively, but a negative effect on amotivation. Relatedness had a positive effect on intrinsic motivation and identified regulation which are subordinate factors of motivation regulation, and had a negative effect on amotivation. The subordinate factors of basic psychological needs, intrinsic motivation and identified regulation, had a positive effect on PE grade. But amotivation had a negative effect on grade. In addition, among the subordinate factors of basic psychological needs, competence and relation showed complete mediation relation, but autonomy didn't show any significant results, which is different from indirect effects on PE grade according to subordinate factors of basic psychological needs. This study has the significance to confirm the importance of self-determination in PE class by understanding how basic psychological needs and motivational regulations are related to the students' PE grade.
