Abstract
The ♭7 in major-minor scale system, which is lowered a half note down from a leading tone, is not only one of the characteristics of Czech folk melody, but also the way of expression frequently used by Antonín Dvořák(1841-1904). In his music before his stay in the United States, the ♭7 tends to emphasize the melodic progression of the 1→♭7, which is the characteristic of Czech folk melody, and forms a half cadence as a dominant function at the end of the phrase. However, the works composed during the stay reflect the progression of ♭7→1 under the influence of the Negroes and the Indians and develop into various uses. The harmonic use of ♭7 is remarkable in the works of this period, and III and ♭VII made by ♭7 perform the dominant function, proceed to the tonic and create an authentic cadence. Also, ♭VII can extend into a tonal structure and replace the dominant relationship of tonal music.
