Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate tDCS effects for motor skill learning in the whole body dynamic balance task for older adults. We hypothesized that tDCS over the supplementary motor area (SMA) that is known for important cortical area in the learning and control of multi-joint whole body movements. 18 older adults (9: aSMA-cPFC, 9: sham control), who were right-handed and had no-neurological disease, participated in and applied 20 minutes of tDCS over SMA and PFC while participants performed a dynamic balance task. The experiments conducted for 2 days(day 1: 15 trials with tDCS, day 2: 15 trials without tDCS). Both group revealed enhancement on whole body dynamic balance according to trials as well as the aSMA-cPFC group had a tendency to increase ability on whole body dynamic balance with regard to tDCS. These results showed that older adults have the possibility on whole body dynamic balance through repetitive and implicit training. Also, tDCS over SMA for older adults is a possible protocol to enhance whole body dynamic balance in the early stage learning for older adults.
