Abstract
The years between 1980 and 2000 in Peru are known as ‘Manchay Tiempo’, a hybrid Quechua/Spanish term that literally translates as ‘the time of fear’. Many cultural and artistic texts in different genres provide many examples of the political violence during this period of the internal civil war. Among them Goodbye, Ayacucho stands out and fulfills its social role not only because it was published in the year in which terrorism had culminated its threat to the government, but also presents an experience similar to that which many Peruvians have experienced at the end of the 20th century. This article examines the sociopolitical meaning of novel Goodbye, Ayacucho through its critical reception to explain breifly the main themes and analyzes the difference between the novel and the performance of the collective theater group Yuyachkani. If the migration from the novel to the theatre occurs, it may be in the ideological reception of Adiós Ayacucho, because the marks of andeanization are more explicit than the orignal novel. Here, more attention is paid to the version adapted to the theater than the original novel, due to the fact that the play has been presented for thirty years, making the memory and trauma of the internal war more visible than the novel and transmitting the violent conflict that no one in power wants to acknowledge.
