사위성 신변 서사와 망고 수변 모티프 분석

오랜 세월 동안 전승되어 오는 위대한 인물의 신화적 일화들이 때로는 역사적 사실이나 실제 사건보다 훨씬 더 지대한 영향력을 미치고 있다는 사실을, 누구든지 부인하기란 쉽지 않을 것이다. 더구나 종교 분야의 인물일 경우에는 더욱 그러하다. 본 논문은 붓다의 일생 일대 사건들 중에서 가장 중요시 여기는 여덟 가지의 사건 중에서 사위성(舍衛城) 신변 서사, 그 중에서도 망고 수변(樹變) 모티프를 중심으로 논의하였다. 망고 수변을 간단히 요약하면, 이교도(異敎徒)의 온갖 방해에도 불구하고, 붓다 자신이 미리 선언했던 대로 간다의 망고 나무 아래서 신통 시현에 성공했다는 사건이다. 사위성의 신변 서사에서 망고 나무 신통은 쌍 신변, 천불 화현과 함께 필수적으로 이루어진 듯이 언급되곤 한다. 특히 불교의 8대 성지 순례와 함께 설명되는 경우에는 더욱 심화되는 경향을 보인다. 그러나 사위성 신변 서사에, 당연히 포함되리라 여기는 망고 나무의 신통은 극소수의 문헌에 나타날 뿐, 일반적으로 거론되지 않는다. 필자는 본 논문에서 사위성 신변 서사를 다루고 있는 대표적인 전거(典據) 문헌으로서, 10종을 추출하여 비교 분석하였다. 그 결과, 『자타카』와 『법구주석』을 제외한 다른 문헌에서는 망고 나무의 신통을 언급하지 않으며, 도리어 치목(齒木)과 관련된 붓다의 신통이 더 많이 나온다는 점을 분석해 냈다. 그리고 여러 문헌에 나타나 있는 수변 신통은 만다파(神通舍)를 장식하기 위해서 좋은 나무를 구해 오는 데 발휘되었다는 점도 부각시켰다. 사위성에서 펼쳐졌던 신통 대결에 필수적인 만다파의 장식을 위해서 왕부터 천신에 이르기까지 다양한 계층의 존재들이 붓다의 성공을 위해서 조력하고 있다는 모티프에도 주목하여, 붓다뿐 아니라 다양한 계층의 여러 인물들이 신통을 발휘했다는 점을 드러내었다. 이와 같이 다양한 전승 문헌을 비교하고, 고대 인도 불교의 서사에 대한 현대인의 편향과 오류의 원인을 분석하여, 서사의 원형에 근접해 보고자 시도하였다.
Abstract
The mythological anecdotes of great figures that have been passed down through the ages, sometimes have a much greater impact than historical facts or actual events, it would be difficult for anyone to deny that. Moreover, this is especially true when it comes to figures in the religious field. Among the eight important events in the Gautama Buddha’s life, this paper focused on the Buddha’s mystic wonder(prātihārya) in Śrāvastī, especially the motif of the mango tree miracle. To summarize the great miracle of the mango tree briefly, despite all the interference from the pagans, this was an incident in which the Buddha himself successfully demonstrated his magical powers under a mango tree, as he had previously declared. In the narrative of Buddha’s mystic wonder in Śrāvastī, the miraculous event of the mango tree is often mentioned as an essential part of that story. This tendency becomes even more intense, especially when explained together with the pilgrimage to the eight major Buddhist holy sites. However, the narrative motif of the mango tree appears only in a very small number of buddhist texts and are not generally discussed. In this paper, I extracted 10 representative sources of literature dealing with the narrative of Buddha’s mystic wonder in Śrāvastī, and compared and analyzed them. As a result, I got to know that other than the Jātaka and the Dhammapada Commentary(Dhammapada-Aṭṭhakathā), no other literature mentions the miraculous powers of the mango tree. On the contrary, it was analyzed that Buddha’s supernatural power was related to the tooth tree(dantakāṣṭha) in many cases. And I emphasized that in various texts the miraculous magic about the tree was shown to obtain good trees to decorate the pavilion(prātihārya maṇḍapa) of Buddha. I paid attention to the motif that from the king to the heavenly gods, various classes of beings displayed supernatural powers and decorated the pavilion. They assisted in Buddha’s success. By comparing various buddhist texts, I attempted to approach the prototype of narratives by analyzing the causes of modern people’s prejudice and error against ancient narratives.
