아잔타 후기 불교석굴의 사위성 신변도 연구

초록

석가모니불이 외도와 중생을 교화시키기 위해서 일으켰던 신변(神變, pratihārya) 중에서 사위성(舍衛城, Śrāvastī) 신변에 관한 불전과 아잔타 후기석굴의 벽화를 비교 고찰한다. 사위성의 신변은 경전마다 그 내용이 조금씩 다르고 지역에 따라 불교미술에 표현된 도상도 약간씩 차이가 있다. 팔리 경전 계통에서는 망고나무 기적과 석가모니불 몸체 위아래에서 불과 물을 교대로 뿜어내는 쌍신변(雙神變)을, 유부 문헌 계통에서는 쌍신변과 석가모니불이 다양한 화불(化佛)을 화현시키는 기적을 주로 묘사하고 있다. 석가모니불이 다불화현을 일으키는 모습은 5세기 이후 굽타 시대, 사르나트에서 처음으로 나타나, 5세기 후반 아잔타 후기석굴의 불당전실 등에 벽화로 그려진다. 본고에서는 『디비야바다나』(Divyāvadāna) 제12장 「쉬라바스티 기적경」을 중심으로 사위성 신변에 관한 문헌 서술을 검토한다. 한편 아잔타 후기 불교석굴의 사위성 신변도 7점을 분석하여 인도 불교미술에서 묘사된 사위성의 신변을 상세히 검토한다. 이를 바탕으로 사위성 신변에 관한 불전의 서술과 석굴 벽화의 묘사를 비교 고찰한다. 본고는 아잔타 후기석굴의 사위성 신변도가 유부 계통의 문헌에 기초를 두고 있으며, 불당의 본존을 초월적 존재로 부각시키기 위해 본존 앞의 불당전실에 사위성 신변도가 주로 나타나는 것에 주목한다.

Abstract

It could say that the Pratiharya (pratihārya) by Sakyamuni in Śrāvastī is representative of a miraculous intervention to reform people and non-Buddhists. The story of Pratiharya of Śrāvastī is described in little by litter different ways as sūtra-s, and the Buddhist iconography on it also varied in different localities. In the case of Pāli canons, the story is described as the miracle of mango trees and of the double supernatural transformations that water and fire are spouted out in turn from the upper and lower of Sakyamuni’s body. On the other hand, in the case of Sarvāstivādin’s literature, Sakyamuni is portrayed mainly to make the miracle of the double supernatural transformations and many Buddhas’ appearances. After appearances of many Buddhas by Sakyamuni have painted firstly at Sarnath in the Gupta period, they were expressed as mural paintings in the Front room of the Buddha hall in Ajanta’s latter Buddhist caves about 5 CE later. The paper, firstly, researches the story of Shravasti’s Pratiharya in the Buddhist literature, especially focusing on Divyāvadāna, the 12th chapter, The Miracle of Shravasti and secondly, analyzes seven mural paintings in the part of latter of Ajanta's Buddhist caves to compare the descriptions of the Buddhist literature and the depiction of the Pratiharya paintings of Ajanta.
