초록
John Donne's Holy Sonnets trouble many readers because the poems do not offer a satisfying conclusion or resolution to the anxiety, doubt, and despair that is implicit in the sonnets. The Holy Sonnets are also troubling because they do not contain the joy and assurance of salvation that a reader would expect from one of the English church's greatest divines. Though they may reflect Donne's anxiety and despair, this study attempts to show that the absence of any resolution in the Holy Sonnets is a reflection of Donne's belief in the assurance of salvation based on the imputed righteousness afforded to humanity by the vicarious atonement provided by the death of Christ. Viewed in this manner, the Holy Sonnets can be seen as a reflection of Donne's belief that salvation is wholly determined by God and that man is unable to contribute to his salvation. The Holy Sonnets are thus a plea to a sovereign God who determines the salvation of men. Likewise, the anxiety, doubt, and despair that Donne exhibited in the Holy Sonnets are absent in the Sermons which are a proclamation of the believer's assurance in regard to salvation and reflective of the Calvinist doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. The assurance of salvation contained in the Sermons thus provide an answer to the problems of the anxiety, doubt, and despair, posed in the Holy Sonnets.
