초록
This article aims to examine how John Donne’s Devotions upon Emergent Occasions III embodies his internal discomfort caused by persistent recognitions of human frailty, sinfulness, and limitation. It also investigates his resilient attempt to overcome such an internal predicament via contemplations into providential purpose and emancipation of the Almighty from physical and spiritual infirmities. Numerous textual evidences of the last prose indicate Donne’s spiritual pilgrimage into searching for divine insight to confront and overcome evil spirits, which have led to his inward turbulence charged with perceptions of instability, transitoriness, and boundary of manifold human occurrences. In three interlinking sections of the work, Donne conducts a vigorous investigation into inward distress, simultaneously undertaking a resilient quest for settling the persistent haunt of inner destructive power via his sacred awakenings of salvation.
