초록

Published by the Oxford University Press, A History of Hong Kong claims that Hong Kong’s real history commenced after the arrival of English people in 1841. Solomon Bard’s in Search of the Past: A Guide to the Antiquities of Hong Kong, a Hong Kong governmental publication, indicates that the predecessors of Hong Kong’s population probably descended from the Malays in the Pacific Ocean. However, neither of the above arguments can be scientifically verified. In fact, according to archaeological excavations, signs of human habitation and activities in Hong Kong can be dated back to as early as the Neolithic period. Because the remains excavated in the Tai Wan site of Lamma Island were first discovered in the Pearl River estuary, they were named the “Tai Wan Culture”(大灣文化) according to archaeological conventions. The interactions among and distributions of archeological cultures are complex. For example, the Tai Wan culture had close relationships with the peoples who inhabited the middle- and downstream of the Yangtze River basin and the islands of Southeast Asia. Although the excavation at Lamma Island has been conducted for over 20 years, scholars tend to neglect the relation between the Tai Wan Culture and Asia. Regarding this concern, this study presented the Yazhang(牙璋) and Shipai(石拍) excavated from the Tai Wan site to demonstrate the exchanges between these early inhabitants of Hong Kong and those from other Asian areas in ancient times. The research findings are expected to enhance academia’s knowledge regarding the ancient history of Hong Kong.

Abstract

Published by the Oxford University Press, A History of Hong Kong claims that Hong Kong’s real history commenced after the arrival of English people in 1841. Solomon Bard’s in Search of the Past: A Guide to the Antiquities of Hong Kong, a Hong Kong governmental publication, indicates that the predecessors of Hong Kong’s population probably descended from the Malays in the Pacific Ocean. In fact, according to archaeological excavations, signs of human habitation and activities in Hong Kong can be dated back to as early as the Neolithic period.
